Our First Greenhouse
In its glory days, the former Van Lierop Bulb Farm had gained international recognition for its premium bulb flowers - tulips and daffodils used to cover nearly one hundred surrounding acres of the farm. While Step By Step was only able to purchase a small amount of the surrounding farmland, we are working to preserve some of the agricultural roots of this farm's rich history. In addition to finding creative ways to grow flowers here once again, we are highly anticipating the arrival of our first greenhouse!
Our 'Harnois' Retail Greenhouse
THE GREENHOUSE WILL OFFER A MULTIPURPOSE SPACE AND SERVE THE ORGANIZATION AND COMMUNITY IN A VARIETY OF CAPACITIES:
Edgewood Flower Farm Signature Moss Baskets
Step By Step has enjoyed a longtime friendship with Bill & Donna O'Ravez, whose family owned and operated the Edgewood Flower Farm for over 50 years, before it closed its doors. The community has grieved the loss of this treasured farm that had deep roots in the North Hill community, having grown from a small roadside berry stand in 1934 to a full service destination garden center.
Since Step By Step purchased the former Van Lierop Bulb Farm property, it has been our desire to build a greenhouse onsite, so that the Edgewood Flower Farm's famous Signature Moss Baskets could continue to be grown. Bill & Donna are partnering with Step By Step and are training our staff how to grow these beautiful baskets.
Entry-Level Workforce Preparation Program & Vocational Training
The Greenhouse will be run and operated as a workforce preparation program for disadvantaged women with young children. The program will serve as an entry-level program that offers basic Job Readiness and Soft Skills Training as well as some Vocational Training opportunities including retail, sales, and customer service.
The Greenhouse will eventually offer seasonal retail items year round. In the future, we plan to purchase a second greenhouse, where we can grow tulips and daffodils, as a tribute to the Van Lierop family and in honor of the history and legacy of the farm. We hope to also grow seasonal fresh produce to support our onsite Cafe, Catering, and Culinary Skills programs.
